CALGARY, AB, November 28, 2012 (Press-News.org) Skincare patients seeking injectable facial treatments should choose their injector carefully, says Dr. Jason McWhirter of ReNue, a Calgary skincare clinic that also has a medi spa near Calgary in Airdrie.
"Even minimally invasive treatments can present some very real dangers when put in the wrong hands," says Dr. McWhirter, who specializes in personalized skin care in Calgary. "It's crucial to choose a practitioner with the necessary level of training and experience. My injection patients appreciate the fact that an actual physician is performing their injections."
Although classified as non-surgical, facial injections and other wrinkle-reducing and rejuvenating techniques are still medical procedures with genuine risks. For example, JUVEDERM, a smooth-gel dermal filler, can cause severe allergic reactions, skin necrosis (skin death) and even blindness if injected incorrectly or without the proper precautions.
Similar care should be taken with BOTOX Cosmetic, a wrinkle-reducing injectable treatment that contains botulinum toxin. On rare occasions, BOTOX has triggered side effects that have included issues with breathing and swallowing, muscle weakness and - in extreme cases - death.
"There is no reason to believe injections are inherently hazardous," Dr. McWhirter says. "These treatments are highly effective methods of reducing the signs of aging in the face and neck without having to undergo surgery.
"However, patients should be aware of some of the potential risks they face with any medical procedure. The best way to ensure your safety with any treatment, including a facial injection, is to choose a licensed physician who is highly trained and experienced with the procedure."
Recognized throughout Canada as an outstanding injector, Dr. McWhirter personally administers all injectables, such as BOTOX Cosmetic and JUVEDERM, at his Calgary and Airdrie clinics.
In addition to injectable treatments, patients can choose from a wide array of safe, effective options for hair removal and skin care, ranging from laser vein treatments to chemical peels and microdermabrasion. ReNue also offers medical dermatological procedures such as cancer screening and mole and wart removal.
Dr. McWhirter is a fully licensed physician who has trained with several of the leading dermatologists in Canada. With a special emphasis in dermatology and skin care issues, he is dedicated to providing the best possible skin treatment for each individual, and he prides himself on offering the latest products and procedures to provide state-of-the-art results.
Dr. Jason McWhirter is a licensed physician who specializes in medical and cosmetic dermatology. He received his medical degree from the College of Physicians of Alberta, and he is a fellow of the Canadian College of Family Physicians. His medical education has included instruction from some of the top dermatologists in North America, as well as training in both urgent care and sports medicine. Dr. McWhirter founded ReNue in downtown Calgary in 2002 as a skincare-focused component of his existing medical practice. He founded a second location in Airdrie in 2007. His main emphasis is minimally invasive facial-rejuvenation procedures.
