Edmond Masjedi: Pairing Wines with Holiday Foods

As Americans enter the holiday season, many are concerned about how to make the best seasonal dishes and find the perfect beverages to go along with them. A wine industry professional, Edmond Masjedi discusses how to best serve these comfort foods.

2012-11-30
PHILADELPHIA, PA, November 30, 2012 (Press-News.org) To many Americans, the culture of wine aficionados may lead many to believe that pairing wines with specific food is an art reserved for exquisite meals. However, a recent article from The Palate Press reveals that when it comes to comfort foods, choosing a wine is a fairly simple, and affordable, task. It states, "Wine for comfort food should, like the food itself, make no demands. It should pair effortlessly to avoid dissonance. It should be easygoing and unfussy. It shouldn't take itself too seriously." Having worked in many areas in the wine industry, Edmond Masjedi takes a similar approach, and notes that affordable, high-end wines are available for many of those that plan on enjoying wine with their favorite holiday season comfort foods.

Edmond Masjedi explains, "Consumers can become increasingly concerned with the quality of a wine and what dishes they are pairing it with. While this is a practice favored by many wine enthusiasts, the truth of the matter is that many Americans simply want to enjoy wine and food without having to research extensively or worry about impressing dinner guests." Masjedi continues by noting that he has worked on the distribution end of the wine industry, and notes that many individuals who are seeking out flavorful, yet affordable and adaptable wines must look no further than their local grocery stores.

According to the article, each comfort food has its own specific flavors that require the unique touch of a select wine. While these wines are meant to prove "unfussy," it is important for every wine drinker to learn the distinction of flavors. For example, the article recommends that the rich, creamy and buttery flavors of mashed potatoes requires the taste of "nearly any red or un-oaked white" wine. On the other hand, those serving roasted chicken--a Christmas dinner favorite--may want to look for the bolder taste of a pinot noir when serving to guests.

While there may prove many varieties of wine for many types of dishes, Edmond Masjedi urges new connoisseurs to not become overwhelmed by the selections. He concludes, "Since there are many affordable wines, it is best to approach the holidays by purchasing a wide selection of wines. Instead of seeking out the perfect wine for each meal, it can prove more convenient to buy many different wines in a single trip. This way, cooks and diners can experiment with the flavors of wine and find out which pair best with certain dishes. If the flavor does not fit, they can save it for later and not worry about having wasted a great deal of money."
