LANCASHIRE, ENGLAND, December 05, 2012
The ICEHOTEL is one of the world's most famous hotels to be made entirely from snow and ice. It lays claim to being the first of its kind, accommodating guests since 1992, and it is currently the largest in the world, attracting thousands of visitors every year. One of the things that Lapland is most renowned for is the Northern Lights, which ripple across the skies every winter between October and April. These phenomena are the inspiration behind the Northern Lights suite at the ICEHOTEL, which is new for the 2012/2013 period.
Christened 'Diamond Genesis,' art suite number 339 is the creation of French architect Antoine Weygand and designer Roland Toupet. One of the walls is made from translucent ice, which allows the glow of the Northern Lights to come flooding in at night time.
The other walls of the Northern Lights suite at the ICEHOTEL are carved with images of snowflakes and the floor is strewn with giant ice diamonds, giving the room its 'Diamond Genesis' moniker. The artists have created a room of contrasts - diamonds being famously known as 'forever' and the ice being so temporary.
Although the temperature inside the Northern Lights suite at the ICEHOTEL is minus five degrees centigrade and the bed is made completely from ice, thick reindeer hides and thermal sleeping bags are provided so that guests can keep cosy throughout the night. Guests wake up to a welcome cup of hot lingonberry juice before spending some time in the sauna. Toilets and washing facilities are located in the warm building adjacent to the ICEHOTEL.
As well as the Northern Lights suite at the ICEHOTEL, there will be around 50 other guestrooms, each with its own unique design. There is also the legendary ICEBAR, where guests can socialise in the evenings as they sip drinks from glasses made out of ice, and next to the hotel is the Ice Chapel, which conducts wedding ceremonies all winter long.
Located on the banks of the Torne River in the village of Jukkasjarvi, around 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, the ICEHOTEL is surrounded by the pristine wilderness of Swedish Lapland, a place where people and nature exist as one. The nearest city and airport is Kiruna, which is only 12 kilometres away.
The ICEHOTEL can only exist during the winter months when the temperatures are low enough to prevent the building from melting. At the beginning of every winter it is rebuilt from scratch and then left to melt away naturally as spring advances. For the architects and designers, it brings new opportunities to experiment with different layouts and artistic themes.
