RANCHO SANTA FE, CA, December 25, 2012 (Press-News.org) The Grauer School will host the film screening and post-film discussion of "Miss Representation" on Thursday, January 17, 2013, at 6:00 pm in the Great Hall on the school campus located at 1500 S. El Camino Real in Encinitas. Writtten and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the 90-minute inspiring documentary priemered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and reveals how all forms of media (television, feature films and the internet) contribute to the under-representation of women in American leadership positions and an over-emphasis on youth and beauty. Stories from teenage girls and compelling interviews with Condolezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, and Katic Courica, mong many others, disclose startling statistics that challenges the media's misleading portrayals of women and girls. The film (which aired on the Oprah Winfrey network in October 2011) imparts the message that in an ever-increasing media-driven world, teenage girls are being tempted to adopt a biased perspective, one which undermines their intellegence and substantive accomplishments. This phenomena may lead to barriers for women who aspire to achieve leadership positions and instead, trivializes the role of women in general. The Grauer Film Series event is free and open to the public; the film is appropriate for children age 13 and older. For details, visit http://www.missrepresentation.org/the-film/, or email Sally Grauer regarding questions, sallygrauer@grauerschool.com, or call 760/944-6777.
Grauer School Principal Dana Abplanalp-Diggs explains, "This film depicts a growing trend in the media that demonstrates how frequently all forms of media berate the role of women in society. Ms. Newsom invites viewers to take an in-depth look at her revelations regarding gender bias in the media and why this is becoming an ever-increasing concern for parents and teenagers alike. It's a compelling film that delivers a message that The Grauer School feels should be addressed. As the values emphasized by media are counter to the core values of The Grauer School --- an educational model that fosters leadership, resourcefulness, self-advocacy, intellectual curiosity, perseverance, compassion, and accountability in both our young women and men ---- we feel this compelling film delivers a message that needs to be addressed. We invite the public to join us for the screening and engage in a compelling discussion that will have an impact on both their sons and daughters."
The Grauer School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), a member of the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS), and is the only school in the region to be honored as a designated UNESCO school. The school serves as an inspirational educational model that balances expeditionary learning, humanitarian service and college preparation for hundreds of private schools around the world through the Coalition of Small Preparatory Schools (CSPS) established by Founding Head, Dr. Stuart Grauer.
