LONDON, ENGLAND, January 04, 2013 (Press-News.org) UK personal training specialists MotivatePT have reported record levels of demand for personal training services in Manchester - a city that has become known for its health conscious attitude over the last few years.
Yet less than a decade ago trying to find a personal trainer in Manchester may have proved a difficult task, as Manchester had the rather ignominious accolade of being named the UK's fattest city by the Daily Mail. In a national survey of health indicators, Manchester was highlighted as a city that took little interest in exercise and wellbeing, with a significantly higher incidence of obesity and alcohol-related illness than anywhere else in England.
Tony Richardson, Commercial Manager at MotivatePT comments, "We have seen a considerable growth in customer numbers in the Greater Manchester region over the last 5 years - far more than any other region in the UK. Our own research has shown that Manchester has become an extremely health-conscious city with record numbers of health clubs, gyms and fitness chains all choosing to open new sites in Manchester."
Propelled by a growing demographic of young, educated and wealthy career-professionals, Manchester has seen a significant social shift in attitudes towards health and wellbeing. Michael Dawlish who works as a financial advisor in Manchester comments, "Myself and my colleagues all take our health very seriously. We understand the importance of eating properly and exercising regularly. I have been personal training for the last 2 years and see no reason in stopping. Any investment in my health that helps me to look and feel better is worth every penny."
Private medical provider PruHealth also voted Manchester as one of their top fittest cities in their recent national health survey. They highlighted the city's high number of health clubs and the lower than average hospital admissions due to smoking or alcohol related-illnesses.
Catherine Palmer who has been working as a personal trainer in Manchester for MotivatePT for over 4 years, moved to the area from Scotland in order to pursue her personal training career. "Manchester is an amazing city and demand for personal training is definitely at a high. I am inundated with new customer enquiries and have had to start offering outdoor group training so I can accommodate all my customers. It's a nice position for any personal trainer to find themselves and such a cosmopolitan city to work and live in. I am lucky to train a number of celebrities here in Manchester in addition to business people, doctors, lawyers and many busy mums. I would definitely say that Mancunians are health conscious people who take their fitness seriously."
Other towns and cities in the North West also found themselves creeping up the healthy city poll. Mark Grainger who works as a personal trainer in Liverpool has experienced a sharp increase in customer numbers over the last few years and puts this down to changing attitudes towards health and education across Merseyside. Liverpool demonstrated a similar increase in development of leisure centres and health clubs in the region together with an increase in disposable income amongst younger working professionals.
The fittest city poll was assembled through government statistics, online research and surveys based upon percentage of smokers, exercise undertaken, frequency of medical checkups, alcohol consumption and provisions of health clubs and sports facilities. Whilst Manchester was shown to have the highest percentage of fitness instructors, personal trainers in Chester reported the highest earnings than anywhere else in the North West.

Health of Truck Drivers a Factor in Truck Accidents?
2013-01-04
Truck accidents frequently cause death and serious injuries to occupants of passenger vehicles. The speed of the trucks as well as the size of the vehicles makes it difficult for truck drivers to make quick moves to avoid potential accidents. Often, when an accident happens, the smaller cars and trucks absorb the complete impact of the crash.
While many laws and design improvements have reduced the number of serious trucking accidents, officials have been trying to find ways to eliminate accidents completely. Much of the attention has been focused on truck drivers, and ...
