Who is the Lord of the Board? And Why You Should Care

Young skimboarder champion set to make history.

2013-01-15
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL, January 15, 2013 (Press-News.org) His name: Roman Hager. Maybe you've heard of him; maybe you haven't. By the time the year is up, you won't soon forget him.

His game: Skimboarding. Having started the sport just one year ago, he is already cleaning up at the competitions. In a very short time Roman has been kicking butt, taking names, and gaining some celebrity status. And people in the industry are noticing.

About Roman Hager:

So what's so special about Roman Hager? For starters, he's only seven years old. Even though he started skimboarding in April of 2011, he has already placed 1st in 4 out of 6 contests. The 2 contests he didn't win were because the division was 13 and under and at the age of 6 and 7 he was outmatched by the likes of Eddie Dixon and Dylan Crawford. Despite these challenges, Roman still managed to place 4th in one of those at the age of 6.

Competitions:

• 1st in Island Water Sports Surf Festival Beginner division / quarter finals in Intermediate division
• 1st in Island Water Sports "Fiesta De Shred"
• 1st in the Vilano Pro/Am
• Did not place in Skim Scare 5
• 4th in Skim Scare 4 (2011) at the age of 6 in the 13 and Under division (1st contest)
• 1st in the Alley Oop Skim / Dance Revolution 2012 and won the Dance Contest (defeating Brad Domke in the Final Round)

Even at such a young age Roman has already started to attract the attention of major skim and other board sport companies. In a time when most riders have to seek sponsorship themselves and work hard to gain recognition, companies are already flocking to Roman on their own. So far he's sponsored by four companies: Zap Skimboards, BC Surf & Sport, Stoked Entertainment and Fly. He is the youngest person ever to be sponsored by a skimboard company. But he's not stopping there!

Roman Hager Interview:

SkimZone, an online resource for information about skimboarding caught up with the Hager Family to see what makes this kid so driven to succeed:

SZ: What goes through your mind when you are competing?
RH: It's like: I got to do this, I got to do this, it doesn't matter how old I am or how old the other kids are. I just want to win when I can.

SZ: How does it make you feel when you win 1st place in a comp?
RH: I feel like I have really put in a lot of work, and it feels really good to hear all the people cheering me on. I LOVE WINNING!

SZ: What are your goals for yourself as a skimboarder?
RH: To become the youngest ever professional skimboarder and to have other kids look up to me as their hero like I do now to the pros.

About Skimboarding

Skimboarding has been an underground sport for a long time but its popularity is catching like wildfire. Although it can be practiced many place, it's usually done on shores, either across the water or into shore-breaking waves in the ocean. "Skimming," as it's referred to, is considered a hybrid of surfing and skateboarding, incorporating many of the same maneuvers. Due to the nature of it, skimboarding is a great spectator sport: the rides are quick and they're easy to see from the shore, offering everyone a chance to be involved, whether they skim or not.

"Even though skimboarding has been around for longer than many of us have been alive, most people didn't realize its potential," says SkimZone Founder, Nicole Rigler. "The past few years, however, has seen the sport mature and grow into a highly technical, faced-paced, body-pounding, adrenaline-surging, fusion of surfing and skateboarding. Fortunately there have been several incredible athletes who have, for the love of the sport, forged a path for the younger generation to be able to enjoy athletic sponsorship - something many talented riders have never been able to achieve due to lack of support. We're not there yet, but very close. While the pioneers and current generation of riders have pushed to get skimboarding on the map, it's the younger generation who will be setting new limits, raising the bar and continually re-inventing the sport. Kids like Roman are going to be making history - and that, is why you should care."

At just seven years old, with only one year of skimboarding experience and already taking home 1st in nearly every competition combined with a wealth of sponsorship supporting him, there is no doubt that Roman Hager will achieve his goal to be the youngest paid skimboarding athlete in history. And there is no doubt that he truly is, the Lord of the Board.
