KINGSTON, JAMAICA, January 17, 2013 (Press-News.org) For several years Solamon Energy executives have invested the time, energy and effort traveling across Jamaica meeting with senior business leaders, government ministers, strategists and administrators in a concerted effort to understand the process the country had undertaken to effectively switch from fossil to renewable fuel sources and generate sustainable electricity in the future. In light of this activity, Jay Yeo, Solamon President, reports the company is on the ground today preparing to deliver a utility-scale solar plant, having officially responded to the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) Request-For-Proposals last month.
Now that the OUR has met with Jamaica Public Service (JPS) officials to determine capacity and its location specifically, given differing peak usage times and keeping in mind current infrastructure and various system updates required, late last year interested parties were invited to submit proposals for the supply to the national grid on a "Build, Own and Operate" (BOO) basis one or more plants of varying configurations greater than 100kW and up to 115 MW of renewable generating capacity. Joining the fray, and joining the Solamon bid, other applicable renewable energy technologies include Bagasse, Hydro-Power, Waste-to-Energy and Wind.
"The maximum tariff for utility scale PV is 26.73 US cents/kWh, however the government will likely be seeking a lower rate," Yeo adds, "and Solamon is among 85 interested applicants who have submitted Expressions of Interest to the OUR. Unfortunately, the OUR suspended processing unsolicited renewable energy projects in excess of 100 kW until this Request for Proposal (RFP) process has been completed. Therefore, our previous project is now null and void and this represents the only way to break into the market."
Next week Solamon executives will be attending the pre-bid meeting on Jan 17 in Kingston and are very excited about the prospects. The event is being held at the Knutsford Court Hotel. Following the meeting Solamon will announce the project capacity it intends to bid on. The deadline for Submission of Proposals by Applicants is April 2, 2013 and selected projects are slated to begin construction in May 2014 with a proposed commissioning date of May 2015.
Solamon Energy typically offers a ground-mounted solar array of integrated photovoltaic cells over a package of land called the Apollo Acre . The company intends to develop custom solutions with local partners to provide roof-mounted and parking lot systems that are easily augmented by micro wind turbine technology and other innovative features to supply renewable energy.
About Solamon: Solamon Energy Corp. sells integrated arrays of ground-mounted and rooftop photovoltaic cells. These solar power plants are connected by cable to varied transmission equipment, including converters, inverters and batteries, utilizing 5 acres of land per unit; each unit is called an Apollo Acre . Additionally, it is expected the company's business activities will spin-off many jobs locally, given engineering requirements, construction, unit commissioning and subsequent maintenance.
Solamon Energy Corp. is a Toronto based company providing sustainable renewable energy solutions to the Caribbean, and Central America.
