Pie Collaborating on Colorado University Renovation Projects

Pie Consulting & Engineering (Pie) is currently providing building enclosure commissioning (BECx) and consulting services on two separate University of Colorado renovation/expansion projects in Boulder, Colorado.

2013-01-19
ARVADA, CO, January 19, 2013 (Press-News.org) Pie Consulting & Engineering (Pie) is currently providing building enclosure commissioning (BECx) and consulting services on two separate University of Colorado renovation/expansion projects in Boulder, Colorado.

A $63 million renovation/expansion project of the student rec center and ice rink will increase the size of the facility by 30 percent (304,000 square feet) and feature new amenities including: an outdoor aquatics facility, an indoor multi-activity turf gym, expanded space for weight and cardiovascular fitness training, additional fitness studio space, a renovated ice rink, and a climbing gym and bouldering area. The renovation will also include updates to the heating, cooling, and fire safety of the building.

Retained by Saunders Construction, Pie will assist with the reconstruction of the existing ice rink and provide building enclosure consulting, quality assurance, and air barrier testing and diagnostics.

Baker Hall -

Built in 1937, historic Baker Hall will receive a $43 million renovation featuring a complete interior makeover and subtle exterior repairs to preserve the historic Tuscan architecture of the building.

Originated as an all-male residence in 1937, Baker Hall served as a dorm for U.S. servicemen preparing for battle during World War II. Baker Hall was also home to the U.S. Navy Japanese/ Oriental Language School, which trained students during World War II to break code and translate intelligence. Renovations to the 113,649 square-foot building are slated for completion in fall 2014.

Retained by Whiting-Turner Construction, Pie will perform building enclosure consulting with design development (DD) and construction document (CD) reviews and meetings, hygrothermal (WUFI ) anaylsis, and construction-phase quality assurance observations.

"Major renovation projects always present challenges, especially when you're contending with a special indoor environment like a natatorium. Working with a 75 year old building enclosure can present challenges as well, considering that the project includes window retrofit work and changes to the hygrothermal profile of the wall. We're pleased to be bringing out expertise to these important projects." - Matt Heron, P.E., LEED AP, Building Science Department Manager
