Baker Hall -
Built in 1937, historic Baker Hall will receive a $43 million renovation featuring a complete interior makeover and subtle exterior repairs to preserve the historic Tuscan architecture of the building.
Originated as an all-male residence in 1937, Baker Hall served as a dorm for U.S. servicemen preparing for battle during World War II. Baker Hall was also home to the U.S. Navy Japanese/ Oriental Language School, which trained students during World War II to break code and translate intelligence. Renovations to the 113,649 square-foot building are slated for completion in fall 2014.
Retained by Whiting-Turner Construction, Pie will perform building enclosure consulting with design development (DD) and construction document (CD) reviews and meetings, hygrothermal (WUFI ) anaylsis, and construction-phase quality assurance observations.
"Major renovation projects always present challenges, especially when you're contending with a special indoor environment like a natatorium. Working with a 75 year old building enclosure can present challenges as well, considering that the project includes window retrofit work and changes to the hygrothermal profile of the wall. We're pleased to be bringing out expertise to these important projects." - Matt Heron, P.E., LEED AP, Building Science Department Manager
