AUBURN HILLS, MI, January 24, 2013 (Press-News.org) In support of Glaucoma Awareness Month , Crittenton Home Care offers information on prevention and healthy eye care. According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, more than 2.2 million Americans, and more than 60 million people worldwide, have glaucoma.
Glaucoma is the leading cause of preventable blindness, and is often referred to as "the sneak thief of sight" because there are no symptoms. The good news is that glaucoma is preventable and treatable with regular eye exams.
People at high risk for glaucoma include those who are 60 years or older, have family members with glaucoma or those with diabetes. For those with diabetes, it is important to manage your nutrition, and have regular eye examinations to prevent vision loss.
To aid in prevention, Crittenton Home Care offers a Diabetic Care Program. The Diabetic Care Program is an in-home option assisting with daily diabetic care and management. From meal planning and nutrition information to blood sugar monitoring, skin care and other early detection, the Crittenton Home Care team provides education and support to both families and individuals living with diabetes. The care team also offers education on self-management for independent healthy living throughout all stages of diabetes.
Crittenton Home Care's Diabetic Care Program works closely with the Crittenton Diabetes Nutrition and Education Counseling Center to help seniors and individuals manage their diabetes and overall health.
Crittenton's Diabetes Nutrition and Education Counseling Center Manager, Julie Brown, RD, CDE , states, "People with diabetes are at risk for a wide spectrum of vision problems and eye disease. Good blood sugar management can decrease this risk."
Brown continues," It is important that patients understand the reasons for their blood glucose elevations and take action to minimize the potentially damaging effects. In addition, regular physician follow-up and monitoring is essential in decreasing risk for eye disease in diabetics."
