DURHAM, NC, January 27, 2013 (Press-News.org) Old Chatham Golf Club (http://www.oldchathamgolf.org), a prestigious, Triangle-based golf club, has announced that Brian Powell, director of golf course operations, has been named the vice president of Carolinas Golf Course Superintendents Association (CGCSA), a primary conduit for continuing education and research funding for the entire golf industry.
Formed in 1954, CGSA has about 2,000 members and has served golf course maintenance professionals across North and South Carolina. Providing access to education, research, services and networking opportunities, the association has helped drive a level of expertise that underpins the Carolinas golf industry's international reputation. The Carolinas chapter is the largest affiliated chapter of the Golf Courses Superintendents Association of America.
As director of golf course management, Powell oversees resurfacing and other adjustments needed at Old Chatham Golf Club to keep the course competitive and appealing. His tasks range from discussing plans for improvements with architects to hiring the crews needed for the renovations and scheduling the work so that it interferes with playing time as little as possible.
Powell serves on the U.S. Golf Association Green Section Committee and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Neuse River Modeling Project Stakeholders Panel. He previously served as chair of the N.C. Government Relations Committee for CGCSA and as the golf stakeholder for the 2008-2009 Water Allocation Study Team's Allocation Report to the N.C. Environmental Review Commission. He serves on the board of advisors for the Capital Bank office at Holly Springs, N.C., and previously served on the building and grounds committee of the Cary Academy, an independent, coeducational, college-prep day school for middle and high school students in the Triangle.
Powell grew up with golf in his genes. He played the game with his father, a golf course superintendent and professional for 35 years, and his mother, who was a golfer herself and once served as president of the North Carolina Women's Golf Association. He held several golf-related internships until he became a paid golf course superintendent in 1990. He graduated with a bachelor of science in turf grass management from N.C. State University in Raleigh.
