Scott Studenmund: Internet Video Ads are a Marketing Trend Worth Watching

Although only a single element in the wide arsenal of online marketing tactics, Internet video ads are becoming a major resource for companies. Marketing expert Scott Studenmund comments on the potential of this emerging trend.

In recent decades, marketing strategies have shifted a great deal in response to new entertainment and technology trends found among consumers. Over the past decades, marketing firms have moved away from focusing on traditional television ads to develop campaigns around the market of the Internet. According to Scott Studenmund, owner of Studenmund Marketing Group, online marketing has allowed companies to reach out to audiences in a cost-effective and efficient manner. At first, online marketing dredges up concepts of search-engine optimization, banner ads, social networking, blogging and other trendy tech terms. However, a recent article from NDTV Gadgets suggests that marketing may be making its way back to the television commercial format in the form of Internet video ads.

Internet video ads refer to the wide array of advertisements that present visuals and sound, much like a television commercial, but are tailored for use on specific online sites, such as Pandora, YouTube and Hulu. The article explains, "Internet video ads, long a sideshow in the online advertising market, are gaining in importance to marketers and Web publishers as they look to capitalize on consumers' changing viewing habits and tap a $70 billion television market." It adds that online video ads have become more desirable, as consumers come to use mobile devices that are perfect tools to display advertisements on.

Although the article notes that Internet video ads have yet to become the primary resource for online marketing, Scott Studenmund believes it is a trend to watch--and one that any marketer should stay aware of. Studenmund comments, "If one traces the evolution of online marketing--and marketing in general--it becomes increasingly clear that companies are driven to advertise where consumers are going to be entertained.

While television may not be as a strong place to advertise as it was before, people will continue to go to websites such as Hulu or YouTube to view the content they want to see. It makes sense to ad commercials into those spaces."

According to Scott Studenmund, while Internet video ads may seem like traditional television ads in nature, they offer a new benefit to marketers--that of analytics. Studenmund concludes, "In the old days of advertising, it was simply 'place a commercial and hope consumers see it.' Today, marketers have become more aware of tracking targeted consumers and audiences, which has become increasingly easy with the nature of online analytics. Internet video ads are a great way for companies to target specific demographics."
