SAN DIMAS, CA October 22, 2010 (Press-News.org) Fuel purifier manufacturer RCI Technologies was among the corporate sponsors for the 2010 Matt's Run, a fund-raising 5K run/walk held each year at Cal Poly University Pomona.
Proceeds from the event help support the Matthew Myers Memorial Fund, which provides annual scholarships to Cal Poly Pomona students. This year, nine students were awarded scholarships from the fund.
RCI Technologies employees and their families participated as walkers/runners in the event, which took place this year on Oct. 16 at the campus. More than 600 participants ran or walked the 3.1-mile course.
"The weather was perfect for a morning run," Administrative Assistant Marisa Hernandez said. "My children and I had a wonderful time and enjoyed participating at Matt's Run with the RCI family."
The annual event was created in 2006 in memory of Matthew Brent Myers, a 20-year-old Cal Poly Pomona communications major and avid runner. Myers was crossing a campus road when he was hit and killed by a car in October 2005.
A campus memorial was put up in Myers' memory in 2006. The memorial consists of an etched cross and a memorial stone bearing a plaque engraved with Myers' image and an inspirational message.
"This being my first year of participation, I was really amazed to see the kind of turnout this benefit generated," RCI Sales Manager Gabriel Gutierrez said. "It was just a pleasure and honor to participate. The memorial stone for Matt was incredibly touching as well."
As a founding sponsor of the inaugural run, RCI Technologies has been co-sponsoring Matt's Run every year since 2006.
"We at RCI Technologies gladly support Matt's Run as a corporate sponsor and as active participants in the event," RCI President Robert Randle said. "Our hearts go out to Matt's family and friends, and we are pleased to share in honoring his memory and at the same time help other college students on their paths to pursuing their dreams."
