Wine and Design to Honor Vietnam Vet with Cancer Research Fundraiser on November 13th

Raleigh business' second in-house fundraiser to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

2010-10-22
RALEIGH, NC, October 22, 2010 (Press-News.org) Wine and Design, Raleigh's first and only wine and painting party company, will be holding its second in-house fundraising event on Saturday, November 13th from 6:30pm-8:30pm. The two-hour painting party, being called "An Evening for Tony", will raise funds to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and was inspired by Carrboro resident Lisa Purvis and her father-in-law, Tony Purvis.

Purvis is a woman on a mission and has been supporting and participating in cancer research fundraising events since her father-in-law, Tony Purvis, was diagnosed with melanoma last November. A Vietnam Vet who said he joined the Navy simply because he liked the ocean, Tony Purvis lost his battle with cancer and passed away on September 30th.

"Tony fought his diagnosis with great courage, faith, inconceivable strength, and humility," says Lisa Purvis. "To those who knew and loved Tony, this is just how he lived his life." Tony Purvis was also a family man who lovingly described his wife Helen as his "one and only".

According to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's website, one person is diagnosed with a blood cancer every four minutes. Over 135,000 people in the United States are estimated to be diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma in 2010, and new cases of leukemia, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma will account for 9.0 percent of the 1,529,560 new cancer cases diagnosed in the United States this year. Wine and Design recently held another cancer fundraiser earlier in the month and raised $1,300 for breast cancer research. Studio owners Harriet Mills and Emmy Preiss say they are looking forward to working with Lisa and honoring Tony Purvis' fight through this special event.

"Tony Purvis is one of those great American unsung heroes, and Wine and Design is excited to help Lisa honor Tony for one special night," says Preiss. "This fundraiser is a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together to honor a great man's memory and support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's mission in a truly unique way."

Cost for the event is $45 and includes paint, brushes, canvas, and cover ups. Like all fundraising events held at Wine and Design, 50% of all proceeds will go directly to the cause. This event is open to the public and participants can register for this event by visiting http://www.wineanddesignnc.com.

About Wine and Design
Wine and Design is the dream of longtime friends and business partners Emmy Preiss and Harriet Mills. The premise of the business is to provide "memories and a masterpiece" in just two hours. Painting sessions are led by a local artist who provides step-by-step instructions to first-time painters, aspiring artists, or self-proclaimed pro's that result in an individualized work of art. Wine and Design accepts general reservations, but also books private parties. Bridal showers, baby showers, Bunco, and girls' night out are just a few of their offerings, as well as a selection of events just for kids. The company also hosts fundraisers, with a portion of the proceeds going directly to the cause. For more information, call (919) 374-0667 or visit their website at http://www.wineanddesignnc.com.
