League of Women Voters of Bergen County to Celebrate Women's History Month and League's 93rd Birthday

The League of Women Voters of Bergen County will hold "Celebration of Women's History", an annual festivity to commemorate Women's History Month and the League's birthday.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ, February 18, 2013

The League of Women Voters of Bergen County will hold its annual commemoration of Women's History Month and observe the League's 93rd birthday with a special celebration on Sunday, March 3, 2 to 4 p.m., at the Park Ridge Community Center, 53 Park Avenue, Park Ridge, New Jersey. The entrance to the library on the lower level should be used. The celebration is free and open to the public.

The audience is invited to participate in the program and to select and discuss briefly a woman in current or past United States history, whom they admire. At previous celebrations, contenders have included foremothers who paved the way for future generations, such as Sandra Day O'Connor, Amelia Earhart, Sonia Sotomayor, Abigail Adams, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Elena Kagan, Rosa Parks, Lucine Amara, Alice Guy Blache and many others. Dressing in character is optional, but always adds to the fun. Guests are invited to stay afterward and enjoy refreshments.

The League of Women Voters was an outgrowth of the 19th amendment passed in 1920 giving women the right to vote. With over 800 local Leagues throughout the country, the organization gained prestige by maintaining its nonpartisanship; sponsoring candidates' forums for local, state and national elections; holding registration drives; disseminating nonpartisan information on candidates; and holding public meetings to discuss current issues. Membership is open to both men and women of voting age who support the organization's mission.
