Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are usually made from titanium or titanium alloy. These implants are placed either in the jaw bone or under the gums and above the jaw bone. The type of dental implant the patient receives depends on where he or she needs the implant, the thickness of the jaw bone at the site of the implant, and other factors. In some cases, bone grafts are needed to thicken to jaw bone in the area where the implant will be placed. Implant surgery is typically an outpatient process and can often be conducted with a local anesthetic. Once the implant is placed, the healing process takes 3 to 6 months, depending on the type and placement of the implant as well as how well the patient responds to the implant.
