An Ojai native, Sims graduated summa cum laude from Scripps College in Claremont, Calif., where she received her bachelor's degree in honors economics and honors politics and international relations. In her senior year, Sims was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Epsilon (International Economics Honor Society). She obtained her law degree from University of California, Berkeley, School of Law ("Boalt Hall"), where she was awarded the Law and Economics Fellowship for 2009-2010 Entering Law Students. She was admitted to the State Bar of California in 2012.

While in law school, Sims concentrated her studies in Business Law and Intellectual Property, earning a certificate in Law and Technology. She received jurisprudence awards for obtaining the highest scores in Copyright Law, Art and Cultural Property Law, and Intellectual Property Strategy, and the Prosser Prize for earning the second-highest score in Intellectual Property Transactions. She served as a production editor of the Berkeley Technology Law Journal for two years and published a note regarding secondary trademark liability in the online context.
