NORCROSS, GA, February 26, 2013 (Press-News.org) Atlanta bankruptcy attorneys Clark & Washington, P.C. want people to know that bankruptcy can happen to anyone, for any number of reasons. A good example is the case of actor Gary Dourdan, part of the original cast of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Dourdan played Warrick Brown, a member of the CSI team, on the mega-hit show for eight seasons.
Dourdan's Bankruptcy
The actor filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August 2012, stating that he had approximately $1.8 million in assets, but owed $1.73 million. He said that he earned $14,883 per month, but had $14,562 in monthly bills, leaving him with a disposable monthly income of just $321. The majority of his debt was owed to banks. Under Chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy code, a company or an individual is protected from claims by creditors while an attempt is made to reorganize their finances under a plan approved by the court.
Dourdan claimed that he went broke because of "diminished payments of residuals" after his character was killed off the CBS series. This caused him to default on his two mortgages. The bankruptcy filing was to prevent Wells Fargo from taking possession of his Venice, CA home. He also sued Union Bank, which he claimed denied him mortgage assistance, as required under California law, for a year.
Dourdan has had his share of run-ins with the law in the past five years, which likely did not help his employment prospects. He was arrested for suspicion of possessing heroin, cocaine, ecstasy and prescription drugs in Palm Springs, CA back in 2008. In June 2011, he was arrested for drug possession after a car accident in which he crashed his vehicle into two parked cars. In 2012, he pleaded not guilty to an assault and battery charge for allegedly breaking his girlfriend's nose.
