Get a Sneak Peek into SWDTech's Upcoming Gritty Detective RPG

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ, March 19, 2013 (Press-News.org) SWDTech is gearing up to debut Pixel Noir, a retro RPG that's "sure to scratch the itch that so many gamers have - finding a gritty 16-bit RPG that doesn't spoon-feed them a cute, cartoony game," says co-owner Kunal Majmudar.

Players experience the game as The Detective, a good man who's suffered from bad luck.

"Once an up-and-coming police detective, a bad lead has led to catastrophic consequences for him and his career," says lead writer Jennifer Keating. "Years later, you help him build his career and redeem himself as a private investigator."

Supporting characters include Detective Cold, a tough-as-nails police detective who has no patience for shoddy investigating; Deuce, a "fixer" of problems who knows his way around the underworld; and Woof, a roughneck who's great to have in a fight or at a party.

"I think what people want most out of a game is to immerse themselves in its story and characters. With the depth of storytelling and the wide range of well-rounded characters that players have to choose from in our RPG, I feel confident that we can provide that experience for them," says Keating.

Creative director Len Stuart says the game market is currently inundated with games that lack a "gritty by nature" feel, so when creating a game, he says, he tries to mimic shady places with dramatic lighting.

"Of course, the grittiness is all found in shoot 'em up games and it seems no one has ever really put that in the RPG game before," says Stuart. "Final Fantasy VII had some of this grittiness and it actually made you feel for the characters you were playing."

The SWDTech team is hoping Pixel Noir reminds old-school gamers of the games they played in their younger years.

"Pixel Noir is a 16-bit love letter to the 20- and 30-something gamers who grew up playing games like Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, and the early Final Fantasy games," says Majmudar. "Even though retro JRPGs continue to be released year after year, very little of the content has matured along with the audience. This is a highly profitable gap in the industry that I and the SWDTech team intend to fill."

SWDTech plans to release this game in Q4, 2013 for iOS and Android devices, and it will be soon available for consoles and PCs and Macs.
