MarketStorm Global Ltd Concerned as Lack of Skills Hinder Growth in UK Small Businesses

Leeds-based events marketing firm MarketStorm Global Ltd express concern over findings from the Grant Thornton International Business Report, which reveals that 38% of UK businesses are struggling to find the right people.

2013-04-05
LEEDS, ENGLAND, April 05, 2013 (Press-News.org) 72% cite a lack of technical skills as the main reason, while 18% of businesses are concerned that skills shortages will impact on expansion plans this year.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will be the most affected as they account for 99.9% of all private UK businesses and 59.1% of all private sector employment in the UK. Small businesses alone account for 47% of all private sector employment, according to 2012 statistics from the Federation of Small Businesses.

MarketStorm Global Ltd is a small limited company based in central Leeds which provides event marketing and promotions for national clients. Managing director Gavin Walsh describes the situation as a 'contradiction' which could lead to the possible stagnation of UK industry: "It seems absurd that we have 2.5 million unemployed people in the UK, and yet businesses are unable to find the right talent. The catch-22 is that the more people there are out of work, the fewer people there are with relevant work experience so the situation has the potential to worsen over time. There needs to be a rethink in government policy or in how businesses select talent."

MarketStorm Global Ltd has chosen the latter option by focusing on providing essential skills training for its independent suppliers and contractors. The firm's Business Development Programme compensates for lack of experience in the workplace, by providing workshops and seminars on core skills required by MarketStorm Global's clients. These provide basic grounding in the key areas of sales, customer service, people management and team leadership. "A number of business owners question why I offer training to contractors. They say, 'it's not your job to train them, you should expect them to have the skills already'," admits Gavin Walsh. "The reality is that there aren't many people out there that have the full skillset I am looking for. The Business Development Programme means that all contractors are on the same page, and it enables us to select people based on their essential qualities such as their adaptability, willingness to learn and work ethic. We are not confined to a narrow talent pool, which I think will give us an advantage over other companies in the long term."

MarketStorm Global Ltd provides events marketing services in Leeds, and aims to expand into 10 further UK locations by the end of 2013.
