Fantasy Reaches New Levels at Adult Theme Camps

Mermaid swims with dolphins, Pirate treasure hunts in Cozumel, Vampire Hunts in New Orleans, Wood Nymph retreats at a treehouse resort all the rage

2013-04-07
WYOMING, PA, April 07, 2013 (Press-News.org) Recent years have seen a marked increase of activity in the fantasy genre. What was once relegated to the realm of 'geekdom' has now entered the mainstream in force. This is owed in great part to the success of the Lord of the Rings franchise, which has turned fan appreciation into tourism, making New Zealand a mecca for would-be travelers to Middle Earth.

The Disney team, masters of turning fantasy into real life, have kept apace of the times with a Harry Potter ride and plans for Angelina Jolie to star as the mega evil witch Maleficent in a live-action film. Even the small screen has begun to turn from true crime dramas to more fantastical fare with popular shows like Once Upon a Time, Game of Thrones, Grimm, True Blood, the Vampire Diaries and so on.

Gamers, too, have fallen hard for fantasy. While shoot 'em ups like Grand Theft Auto attract deserved attention for their superior technology, their fan loyalty pales in comparison to the rabid denizens of World of Warcraft. For those who crave a close and in-person interaction, Renaissance Faires and the Society for Creative Anachronism have been enduring balworks. More recently, the Cosplay and LARP movements have enabled fans to incarnate their favorite superheroes.

2013 sees the live fantasy experience taken to new levels by Siren School, a Southern California-based company that hosts Themed Fantasy Camps for adults. Participants can delve deep into the lifestyle and lore of their favorite fictional archetypes: mermaids, vampires, genies, faeries, etc. Similarly, they can embrace their inner pirate, flapper, harem girl, or classic mystery flatfoot. Weekend experiences held throughout the country offer hands-on opportunities to swim with dolphins wearing a mertail, stay in a treehouse resort, hunt for vampires in New Orleans, or play pampered genie at a desert oasis spa. For those who are new to the fantasy scene, online classes are conducted in preparation of the events, with topics such as mermaid tail tutorials, WWII pinup workshops, Charleston lessons and more.

While fantasy purveyors have yet to find a way to offer live dragon riding lessons or instantly transport travelers to alternate times or dimensions, it is clear that the interest in other-worldly experiences is a budding industry and far more than a New York minute fad. So next time you're out gardening and see a neighbor in full pirate regalia, don't assume he is off to a costume party; he may be off to the experience of a lifetime.

Siren School offers an exciting variety of themed fantasy camps for adults. For further information, please contact joy@sirenschool.com
