Greenville Criminal Defense Attorney Mary Catherine Stokes recently returned to her former high school, Arendell Parrott Academy, to speak to high school students about the process of becoming a lawyer and what the career entails. In addition to explaining what she does as a criminal defense lawyer, Ms. Stokes also discussed which college majors students should pursue if they are interested in becoming lawyers. She distributed timelines that broke down how students should prepare for law school during their undergraduate college careers and explained general requirements for getting accepted into law school. Furthermore, the lawyer showed the students a statute book and a case, explaining how law students learn to use cases as tools for analyzing laws. The event, which was held during the school's lunch period, was open to students in the 9th through 12th grades.

By returning to her former high school, the alumnus was able to give young people a glimpse into the career path and career of an attorney. This type of exposure provides important information that can help students decide whether or not they want to pursue careers in law.

The project (a joint effort between the law school and the North Carolina Governor's Crime Commission) focused on fostering collaboration between victims and juvenile offenders as alternatives to punishment. Ms. Stokes was additionally involved in various other activities during her law career, including an internship that allowed her to practice criminal law in district court.
