NORCROSS, GA, April 17, 2013 (Press-News.org) Tree topping, also known as heading, tipping, or rounding over, is a term that describes the indiscriminate cutting of tree branches down to stubs or lateral branches. This pruning technique lops off entire tops of trees, leaving only smaller branches that are not large enough to assume the role of a terminal leader. Even after over 25 years of research and literature describing the hazards of tree topping, it remains a common pruning practice.
The Marietta tree service experts at Yellow Ribbon explain that his technique is dangerous to trees for a variety of reasons. Newly formed bark can be more susceptible to sunburn, possibly resulting in cankers, bark splitting, and eventual death of affected branches. Prolonged sun exposure can also severely damage bark, creating a perfect environment for organisms that cause wood tissues to decay. Topping also stresses the tree by removing 50 to 100% of the leaf-bearing crown. The loss of leaves results in a reduction of the tree's ability to photosynthesize, temporarily starving the tree.
Tree topping is often done to reduce the size of a tree if a home owner feels it has become too large for the property or will become hazardous. However, topping is not the best option of reduction and it will actually make a tree more hazardous over time. According to Marietta tree trimming professionals at Yellow Ribbon, there are many other alternative methods available that will protect the health of the tree.
"Instead of topping, branches should be trimmed back to their point of origin if possible," says Gary Robertson, Owner of Yellow Ribbon Tree Experts. "When a branch needs to be shortened, it should be cut to a lateral that is sturdy enough to assume the terminal role." The Marietta tree service experts at Yellow Ribbon can determine the right methods of trimming necessary to improve the health, appearance, and welfare of your trees.
The Marietta tree trimming professionals at Yellow Ribbon Tree Experts are equipped to effectively reduce the height of your trees while preserving their natural form and health.
