LateRooms.com - Check Out Shoefiti at Cell Art Gallery in Cairns

An exhibition of the work of Nicolette Worth will open in Cairns next month.

2010-08-24
CAIRNS, AUSTRALIA, August 24, 2010 (Press-News.org) The worlds of street fashion and art will collide at the Cell Art Gallery in Cairns next month as part of an exhibition entitled Shoefiti.

Nicolette Worth has created a variety of paintings, lino prints and ceramics to display at the installation, with her works depicting the "many different characters" of a pair of trainers, she explained.

Drawing on a diverse array of influences, including indigenous Australian, Indian and African art, as well as Australian and American hip-hop culture, the artist has endeavoured to create each piece in a different light.

The organisers of the exhibition note that some of the images are fun and exciting, while others may appear harder to interpret, but all of them are still intended to be happy and colourful.

Worth has described these shoes as her greatest passion and love, and revealed she relishes the chance to feature them in her art.

"I hope to give off a contemporary and different feel to my take on what sneaker art is and how it can be expressed," she added.

Culture vultures staying in Cairns accommodation on September 10th 2010 can attend the official launch of Shoefiti at the Cell Art Gallery, which kicks off at 17:30 local time.

The exhibition runs until October 2nd and a minimal fee will be charged on entry.

For more information on this event, visit the Cell Art Space website.

Mercury: the Element Behind Fluorescent Lamps

2010-08-24
Mercury is an essential component of energy-efficient fluorescent lamps, allowing them to produce light and provide a longer life in comparison to incandescent bulbs. A typical fluorescent lamp is composed of a phosphor coated glass tube with electrodes located at either end. The tube contains mercury, of which only a very small amount is in vapor form. When a voltage is applied, the electrodes energize the mercury vapor, causing it to emit ultraviolet (UV) energy. The phosphor coating absorbs the UV energy, causing the phosphor to fluoresce and emit visible light.1 The ...
