Flagler Garden Becomes One Step Closer To Community Garden Reality

The City of Fort Lauderdale CRA Shows Support to Downtown Community Garden with $30,000 Grant to Jumpstart Project

2013-05-12
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL, May 12, 2013 (Press-News.org) After months and months in the works, the City of Fort Lauderdale CRA has contributed a $30,000 grant to the Flagler Village Community Garden. The grant was given by the city CRA to jumpstart the multi-phase project. With the backing and support of Fort Lauderdale, Flagler Garden now has a large portion of the funds needed for the community owned and operated green space.

Flagler Garden President, Chad Scott, shares what receiving the grant represents, "This decision by the Fort Lauderdale CRA has sent a clear message to the community. Fort Lauderdale will now support progressive, forward thinking projects that activate the community. If you have a dream, follow through, well organized plan, and community support, you can make your vision a reality in Fort Lauderdale."

The funds received by the CRA will be used for Phase 1 of the project, which includes entrance gate, decorative fencing, 44 garden plots, irrigation, lighting, seating, pavers, and permeable gravel. Flagler Garden, to date, has already raised $20,000 in addition to the CRA's grant. With that said, the Garden will now have the ability to complete most of Phase 2, as well. Phase 2 of the project includes the remaining 35 plots, group and individual storage, workshop/stage area, and a community bulletin board.

Scott expresses his gratitude for city commissioner, Dean Trantalis, saying, "Dean Trantalis, FTL District 2 City Commissioner, has truly been a partner in the Flagler Village neighborhood since his recent election in March of 2013. He clearly sees that the Flagler Garden mission integrates perfectly with the Fort Lauderdale 2035 Visioning Plan."

The Garden is now planning for a groundbreaking event at the end of June. Stay updated with Flagler Garden by visiting their website at flaglergarden.org or Facebook at facebook.com/flaglergarden.

Flagler Garden will be Fort Lauderdale's first community garden. In 2010, a temporary small patch of land was known as the original garden. Backed by overwhelming community support, Flagler Garden will now break ground in 2013 on land donated by First Lutheran Church. The Garden plans to incorporate garden plots, paths, rain barrels, and garden hanging areas along with offering private event services and a 365-day growing season.
