Montlick & Associates: Complaints About Distracted Driving Common Among Parents

According to Montlick & Associates, many parents are guilty of multi-tasking while driving.

2013-05-21
PHILADELPHIA, PA, May 21, 2013 (Press-News.org) According to Montlick & Associates, complaints about distracted driving are common among parents, who fervently hope that their teenaged children will drive without attempting to text, to check Facebook, or to surf the Web. Recent data suggests that these very same parents may in fact be the biggest culprits, however; according to an NBC News report, many parents or teens and preteens are especially guilty of multitasking while driving. Montlick & Associates has issued a new statement to the press, opining on these findings.

"At Montlick & Associates, we have found that driving while distracted is one of the biggest causes of auto accidents and of accidents involving pedestrians," says Founder and Chief Executive Officer David R. Montlick in a new statement to the press. "As such, studies like this one are truly sobering. The best way for parents to keep their kids safe on the road is to lead by example, putting down their cell phones and setting aside all distractions when they get behind the wheel."

The results of the study, as reported by NBC News, reveal that a staggering 90 percent of all parents say they have been distracted by technology while driving just over the past month. Some specific sources of distraction include texting, talking on the phone, or changing out a CD or DVD.

The same study finds that many different distractions come between parents and safe driving. For example, 70 percent say that they perform childcare duties while driving, such as feeding a child or reaching for a dropped toy. Additionally, 70 percent report "self-care," as well, which might include eating as well as personal grooming.

Surprisingly, multitasking was found to be more common among parents who had, at some point in the past, been in a car accident; those with accident-free driving records also happen to be those least likely to drive while distracted.

Texting was found to be the least common distraction among parents, with only about 10 percent of all parents saying they had texted while driving over the last month. Meanwhile, adjusting a GPS was found to be an extremely common source of distraction, affecting more than half of the parents surveyed.

"There is always a great deal of discussion about distracted teen drivers, and for good reason," concludes David R. Montlick. "With that said, this study reveals that many kids may be getting their poor habits from their parents, and that parents may be among the biggest offenders when it comes to distracted driving."

At the Georgia personal injury law firm of Montlick & Associates, complaints about distracted drivers are common, so the firm works to promote public safety and to help families prevent injuries, as well as to represent victims of auto accidents.
