ANN ARBOR, MI, May 25, 2013

The Wolverine Nature Co. has announced the release of a new bird house product for attracting bluebirds to coincide with the spring bird nesting season in North America. The Gilbertson Bluebird House was originally designed by inventor and bluebird expert Steve Gilbertson of Aikin, Minnesota. Gilbertson created the house to be safe for nesting bluebirds while being less attractive to House Sparrows - an invasive, non-native speciescommon in most states and provinces. The company will be selling the new bluebird house via its store page on Amazon.com.

Bluebirds are common in most of the lower 48 states in American and many Canadian provinces. They are a favorite of many backyard bird lovers because of their color, song, and ease in which they can be attracted to nest in a bird house particular to their needs. However, a problem faced by many bluebird "landlords" is that these houses are often taken over by the more aggressive house sparrow. Sparrows will sometimes even kill the adult and young bluebirds.

The Gilbertson PVC bluebird house was invented in the late 1980's with the goal of attracting bluebirds while discouraging house sparrows. Unlike the majority of traditional bluebird houses that are made mostly of wood, the Gilbertson design has a body made of poly vinyl carbonate, or PVC. The combination of the PVC and shallow depth was found to be less attractive to the sparrows.

Steve Gilbertson manufactured and sold the product until 2012 but decided to retire from the business recently. Gilbertson estimates that almost 40,000 of his bird houses have been put into the field with generally "very successful results".

Wolverine Nature Co. President Kurt Hagemeister notes "The Gilbertson Bluebird House has been known as an excellent design to bluebird enthusiasts for years. We're pleased to be able to now bring this proven nest box to a wider market in North America."

Hagemeister adds "The Gilbertson Bluebird House is also a very versatile design that has been shown to be successful in attracting other species of birds such as chickadees, swallows, and wrens."

The company ships the bird house with comprehensive instructions on how to install and use the product, and offers website support to help customers get better results attracting bluebirds and other cavity nesting birds.
