COQUITLAM, BC, CANADA, November 03, 2010 (Press-News.org) For the first time this season the Express have lost consecutive games. They dropped a pair of 4-3 decisions to the Westside Warriors in regulation Friday, and to the Merritt Centennials in overtime Saturday.
In Friday's game, the Express had the lead on 3 occasions, only to drop it each time; and goalkeeper for the Warriors Kevin Boyle saved a total of 22 shots from the Express. Jason Grecica and Alex Petan scored first period powerplay goals for the Express, but later the Warriors' aggressive fore checking and up ice pressure prevented the Express from getting a shot on goal until the 16 minute mark of the third period. The lack of momentum impacted their confidence and performance on Saturday,
Joe Calvano described Friday's game as "worst game of the season," however Saturday's effort was less impressive. On Saturday, the Centennials had jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes. Coming off 2 OT losses to the Salmon Arm Silverbacks and Penticton Vees, Merritt were gaining confidence, and they were rewarded for their hard work vs. the Express.
"It was an opportunity lost to stay within striking distance of the Langley Chiefs and Powell River Kings for the top 2 positions in the Coastal Conference standings," said Coach Jon Calvano. "I know we're doing better than a lot of other teams, but we hold ourselves to the highest possible standards," Mr. Calvano continued.
"You have to remember that there hasn't been much that could hold the Express down for long. The guys know they're better than that, it won't take them long to bounce back," finished Mr. Calvano. .
