WESTPORT, CT, November 07, 2010 (Press-News.org) Not only is the South of France known for its sunflowers and miles of lavender fields, but also it is really the antique capital of the world. Disclaimer: I have found the most extraordinary finds here in the beautiful U.S. (Many of them French). I can antique any day, any time and for hours upon hours without tire. I have learned to photograph everything I love, has potential or that fits a purpose along the way. I photograph the find, a couple views, as well as the tag for later reference.
Avignon is a great place to start, although a little old world for me, its charm and gorgeous homes on the outskirts are mesmerizing. Avignon is full of history and central to stay, you can work your way out for daily antiquing trips, just be prepared, the journeys can be long, with only small remote rotaries along the way, so you really need to know where you are going before you head out.
Towns to shop, Marseilles, now is home to the recently renamed, ramped up antique fair, "France-Antiquites-Authenticite-Qualite". This fair includes 80 dealers and 20 art dealers in ancient and contemporary art, for the first time this May in Marseilles. Also, Marseilles is home to many hidden gems and Bouillabaisse, which is a must before you go.
Isle sur la Sorgue (with the largest flea market in the South of France) is known as the antique capital of France. During my last visit, I became sick with the worst food poisoning known to mankind. As I sought a place to lie down, I will now forever remember a French band playing outside, singing perfectly "Island in the Sun" by Weezer, as the beating Southern French sun blurred my vision, I remember laughing at the multiple layers of irony there. Despite that, it really is a lovely place to go. The shops are more commercial, with over 300 permanent dealers, anticipating non-French shoppers, but a must go nevertheless at least for Sunday morning market.
Aix en Provence, because of its sheer beauty. The vibe of the town is surreal and fit for a movie (a good one). I am including this because equally, I am a lover of art and retail therapy. Here, you have it all, you can visit Cezanne's studio, shop boutiques (there are some of the most amazing linen shoppes) and yes, scour for antiques, try to visit during market days early (9-12:30 am) Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
