Nicholas Brems: Softball Coach

Nicholas Brems believes coaching a men's community softball team is a great way to be involved with the public during his off-duty hours. And community involvement, he says, is an essential part of his life.

2014-02-28
CLEARWATER, FL, February 28, 2014 (Press-News.org) Nicholas Brems is a veteran police officer, having served twenty years on the force in Clearwater, Florida. Like any good cop, Nicholas Brems takes his job very seriously. But he also understands the value of having fun with friends and giving back to the community, and that's where coaching a men's softball team comes in.

Most American men grew up playing the national pastime, and still have fond memories of the neighborhood teams of their youths. But managing and coaching a team of adults is different from coaching a kids' team, and coaches, like Nicholas Brems, sometimes must walk a fine line. Most of the players have played before and know the game, for example, and may not like being told what to do.

Experienced coaches of adult softball teams, like Nicholas Brems, say it's important to be familiar with all the rules. In many cases adult teams are within the jurisdiction of their city's Parks and Recreations Department. There may be specific rules teams are required to follow. Check to see if there are coach's meetings you can attend to familiarize yourself with any and all regulations.

Experienced coaches, like Nicholas Brems, also recommend setting up a time for your team to practice. Practicing can be fun; it can help your team bond as a unit. It isn't always easy for busy adults to find the time, but it's a lot better than just showing up cold on game day.

Coaches of men's softball teams should also be sure the players know all the rules of the game. That may seem counter-intuitive, but maybe it's been a long time since some of your guys have played. Brushing up on the rules helps as per Nicholas Brems. And sometimes there are certain ground rules unique to a ballpark. Knowing them could work in your team's favor.

Along those same lines, try to keep the umpire on your side. It can be dramatic and entertaining to see a manager argue during a big league game on TV, but it rarely does any good. The same is true in men's softball - and it could end up hurting your team, if the umpire decides to get back and you and your team.

About: Nicholas Brems is proud of his community, and proud to be part of something as wholesome and beneficial as coaching a recreational men's softball team.
