DETROIT, MI, March 12, 2014 (Press-News.org) Nurse owned and operated, Kathelene's Adult Day Health Services (KADHS) is an adult day care center that offers the most affordable long-term care alternative as well as assistance through the social and medical model. It provides a home away from home by creating a safe and comfortable environment where seniors can foster self-esteem by keeping physically, socially and emotionally active.
Founder Teberah Alexander, a 34-year old registered nurse, said that after losing her grandmother who suffered from dementia, she was inspired to create a place to allow dementia patients to socialize with one another.
The organization serves clients starting from age 18 who require special care, cannot be left home alone or have a chronic condition, such as Alzheimer's, dementia, seizure disorder, developmental disabilities, traumatic brain injury, congestive heart failure, autism, diabetes, multiples sclerosis, COPD, stroke or neuromuscular diseases. Alzheimer's affects five million people age 65 and older and is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S.
The goals of KADHS are to prevent social isolation, relieve caregivers and to improve the quality of life of their members in a warm and safe environment. Their highly trained staff can pass medications as well as provide incontinence, memory and wound care.
The center's services and activities include fitness programs, aerobics, yoga, Chi Gong, golf lessons, music healing therapy, pet therapy, physical, occupational and speech therapy, arts and crafts, games and field trips. KADHS has also recently implemented an innovative software technology geared toward the senior community that empowers them through fitness, simulation and cognitive activities. In addition, the center offers a pollo-pescetarian (semi vegan) organic menu to its members to promote a brain healthy diet.
KADHS provides transportation to and from the center and is located at 25820 Orchard Lake Road in Farmington Hills, Michigan. The organization is a member of the Michigan Adult Day Services Association and the National Adult Day Services Association.
In addition, the center hosts a Caregiver Support Group (free respite provided) every second and fourth Wednesday from 1-2:30 p.m. Those interested must RSVP. For more information, call (248) 313-2275 or visit http://www.farmingtonhillsadultdaycare.com.
KADHS is contracted with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which will cover adult day care and transportation to the center. Those interested in these benefits should contact Mary Caesar at (313) 576-1282 and mention they are interested in attending Kathelene's Adult Day Health Services (KADHS).
