If the Texas Medical Board suspects that a physician is in violation of standard medical ethics, treatment or procedures within his or her specialty, a doctor's professional license could be on the line. For example, in February 2014, the Texas Medical Board disciplined 42 licensed doctors and issued three cease and desist orders. The disciplinary matters included those related to quality of care, revocations, unprofessional conduct, supervision, health program violations, medical records and more.

Quality of care

For example, one woman purportedly failed to meet the standard of carein the obstetric treatment for three of her patients. The professional has been ordered to complete 20 hours of medical education concerning high-risk obstetrics within a one-year period, and she must also pay an administrative fine of $3,000.

Unprofessional conduct

Another physician was ordered to complete a course in professional boundaries after a charge of unprofessional conduct. The doctor purportedly participated in an inappropriate sexual relationship with one of his patients. Moreover, the doctor did not maintain medical documents or records for this patient, whom he treated. He must also complete 12 hours of medical education, which includes the following topics:
-Risk management
-Ethics
-Medical records

Moreover, the doctor has been ordered to pay a penalty of $1,000 within 60 days.

Inadequate medical records

Furthermore, another professional from Texas entered into a Mediated Agreed Order after the doctor failed to document his conversations with a patient. The professional also failed to appropriately track the medical analysis of the patient. As a result, the doctor is ordered to 16 hours of medical education concerning the management of pneumonia and eight hours on how to sufficiently maintain medical records.

The medical profession is one with a high standard of care. In essence, if the Texas Medical Board suspects that a physician was negligent or careless in his or her position of medical authority, it could issue citations. Moreover, an innocent mistake could compromise one's ability to practice.
