Stony Brook's Rodger Rau, New York's Christine Kenney Win Michelob ULTRA New York 13.1 Marathon

NEW YORK, NY, March 24, 2014 (Press-News.org) Rodger Rau of Stony Brook, N.Y., and Christine Kenney of New York took first place in the men's and women's divisions of the 2014 Michelob ULTRA New York 13.1 Marathon today at Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Rau, 32, won in a time of 1:17:15, outpacing Jeffrey Meyers of Northfield, Ohio, by more than two and a half minutes. Kenney, 35, also blitzed the women's field, as her time of 1:25:29 was 2:39 faster than runner-up Lauren Meyer of Charlestown, Mass. Approximately 3,000 competitors began the half-marathon, while around 300 laced it up for the Life Time 5K.

Juan Horiuchi, 33, of Jackson Heights, N.Y., won the Life Time 5K in 20:05.68, besting second-place finisher Leandro Carvalho by 22 seconds in the men's race. Angelica Hollweg, 33, of Staten Island, completed the course in 20:50.81, about a second better than 15-year-old Sarah Morgan of Floral Park, N.Y.

"I was planning this as a training run for the Long Island Marathon in four weeks," said Rau. "I kept it easy and was glad to win."

Kenney, training for next month's Boston Marathon, echoed Rau's sentiments. "To earn first is always a good thing," she said. "It was a great day, and a great course."
