Denver Plastic Surgeons Discuss Growing Number of Gynecomastia Patients

The surgeons at Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery discuss the growing number of gynecomastia patients after new statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons

2014-04-14
DENVER, CO, April 14, 2014 (Press-News.org) "Male patients traditionally make up about 5-10% of a cosmetic surgery practice," said Denver gynecomastia plastic surgeon, Dr. Christopher Williams. "However, national statistics provided by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons note an upward trend in males seeking corrective surgery for their chest. Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery has definitely experienced an increase in their male population recently as well."

The practice has experienced a sharp increase in gynecomastia procedures. Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery states that the age range they have seen in the last year is 19-50+, affecting many men at different ages, for different reasons.

Gynecomastia is a plastic surgery procedure that corrects over-developed or enlarged breasts in men. According to the ASPS statistics:

- Gynecomastia surgery increased 11% from 2012 to 2013
- Gynecomastia surgery is one of the three procedures with the largest increase
- Gynecomastia grew 11% between 2012 and 2013, while total cosmetic procedures only averaged a 3% growth

Dr. Jeremy Williams states that "men are becoming increasingly aware that the excessive fatty tissue in their breast can be treated with a relatively simple surgery and minimal downtime. We've seen an increase in the number of male patients who no longer have to be self-conscience with their shirts off, or even in a t-shirt after this procedure."

Gynecomastia is known to cause emotional discomfort and can hurt self-confidence. Some men may even avoid certain physical activities and intimacy simply to hide their condition. It can be the result of hormonal changes, heredity conditions, disease or the use of certain drugs.

Gynecomastia is characterized by:

- Excess localized fat
- Excess glandular tissue development
- A combination of both excess fat and glandular tissue
- Gynecomastia may be present unilaterally (one breast) or bilaterally (both breasts)

Dr. Christopher Williams and Dr. Jeremy Williams of Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery serve the Denver, Lone Tree, Cherry Creek and surrounding areas in Colorado and throughout the United States. In addition to gynecomastia procedures, the Denver plastic surgery office offers other plastic surgery procedures, including breast augmentation, breast reconstruction, body contouring, and breast augmentation using fat transfer.
