TAVARES, FL, April 24, 2014 (Press-News.org) The Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Club's team Blade Runners beat their own 1st place championship time from last year. This year their time was 2:07.32 minutes, besting last year's time of 2:26.61. The Italy bound Black Sheep Marines were right there beside the Blade Runners with a time of 2:07.33. The Miami Dragon Slayers came in third in the final championship race at 2:07.57 minutes (last year 2nd place in 2:30.58). Each took home championship cups and victory towels. The TBDBC Blade Runners also received a ceremonial paddle with a plaque for their Division 1 win. The Village Dragons took the Division 3 winners spot in 2:21.09 minutes.
Eight teams elected to participate in 2K race, new this year. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of this grueling race were the Black Sheep Marines of The Villages 10:34.2, the Miami Dragon Slayers 10:42.4, and TBDBC Blade Runners 10.43.5. Chuck Hiott, 2013-2014 Rotary Club President, said, "Each year the teams get stronger and faster. Some of the teams have competed here since we started 12 years ago." The next Central Florida Dragon Boat Festival is slated for March 13 and 14, 2015.
The Black Sheep Marines took the senior division among five teams. Tampa Bladies won against the other all women's team. Paddlers from the Lake County Dragon Boat Club called Wun Fun Cru won the Measel Cup for 1st Place Community Champions. The winner of the Spirit Trophy was We Be Dragon for their Friday night spirit presentation. We Be Dragon team was sponsored by Ameriprise Financial Services, Linda J. Bennett of Tavares.
