SCOTTSDALE, AZ, December 09, 2010 (Press-News.org) This month marks the four year anniversary of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's renewed approval of the marketing of silicone gel breast implants. In the four years that silicone implants have been available, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Cohen (www.scottsdalecenterforplasticsurgery.com) has seen an increasing number of women choosing these new, improved implants for breast augmentation in Phoenix at his practice.
Some studies indicate that in the United States, women are choosing silicone implants over saline by a factor of 2 to 1. Dr. Cohen has seen even higher numbers at his practice. "The vast majority of our patients are choosing silicone gel filled implants," says Dr. Cohen, "and that preference was established fairly quickly after FDA approval." Dr. Cohen notes that, worldwide, silicone implants have consistently been the more popular choice, with most women citing the natural look and feel that they create.
While some women still feel more comfortable choosing saline filled implants, many have been quick to embrace silicone. "Women tell me that they feel confident choosing silicone implants, particularly since the FDA took more than a decade to investigate their safety," adds Dr. Cohen, who offers both silicone and saline implants at his Phoenix plastic surgery practice.
The silicone gel implants available from implant manufacturers Allergan and Mentor today have been significantly improved when compared to earlier implant types. "The new, cohesive silicone gel filled implants have many advantages," says Dr. Cohen. "The latest generation of silicone implants has an improved safety profile, with the silicone largely remaining within the implant shell in the event of rupture. These cohesive silicone gel filled implants are also more durable than earlier models."
Though durable, this implant type still offers a natural feel that resembles a woman's own breast tissue. The shift in preference to silicone implants has been quick and there is little reason to expect any shift away from them in the coming years. In fact, many patients with older saline implants are now coming in to exchange their implants for newer silicone models.
The bottom line, according to Dr. Cohen, is that women have excellent options. "When it comes to breast implants, one type does not suit everyone. Like any good plastic surgeon, whether I'm consulting about a facelift, breast augmentation or tummy tuck, my Phoenix patients can count on me to guide them in making the choices that work best for their expectations and their lifestyle."
Dr. Robert Cohen is a board-certified plastic surgeon and founder of the Scottsdale Center for Plastic Surgery (www.scottsdalecenterforplasticsurgery.com), offering extensive options for plastic surgery procedures such as breast augmentation for Phoenix women. Dr. Cohen received his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine and trained in general and plastic surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Dr. Cohen also received advanced surgery training at the prestigious W. Grant Stevens aesthetic surgery fellowship. He has presented numerous plastic surgery research studies through peer-reviewed journals and professional societies, and is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
