Green Success Story: Corporate Colocation Exceeds All Expectations
2011-01-03
LOS ANGELES, CA, January 03, 2011 (Press-News.org) Jonathan Goodman, President of Corporate Colocation Inc. reported today that after nearly eleven months of operations, the Corporate Colocation Green Data Center at 530 West Sixth Street in Los Angeles, comprising approximately 11,000 sq feet is exceeding expectations in terms of energy savings and will easily return the cost of the entire green investment in less than the anticipated three years with huge savings thereafter.

While there are few recent examples of government funded green programs with any near term return on investment, the City of Los Angeles can clearly claim a victory here for it's assistance.

Jonathan stated, "Higher than anticipated savings seem to be the result of the effectiveness of the combined effects of 'heat extraction,' 'hot and cold aisle containment,' and 'custom directed ducting,' as well as our location in an urban center with little direct sunlight on the building face."

The most costly element in the build and a key element is the 'heat extraction system,' which involves a separate plenum and internal fans which in effect create a vacuum when combined with proper registers in hot aisles, effectively suck the hot air out of the data-center eliminating and/or reducing the need for mechanical cooling.

Jonathan stated, "An added side benefit of the plenum is that it creates a beautiful stainless steel like frame around the data-center, an ultra high tech touch that clients rave about."

Original calculations and estimates were based solely on 'Air Side Economizing,' a known technology which is only one component of the solution. but the combination of technologies especially 'heat extraction,' have greatly reduced the need for mechanical cooling, with the data center using no mechanical cooling other than fans to cool thousands of servers for many twenty-four hour periods, resulting in reduced energy costs and lower C02 emissions.

Corporate Colocation Inc. is grateful for the support of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power who have indicated a willingness to assist Corporate Colocation in their continued efforts to cut power use and C02 emission in the Los Angeles Area, while promoting business and employment growth.

Jonathan stated, "While the greening of the data center has many benefits financial and added cooling redundancy, thus far it's hard to tell if it has had a positive effect on business or if it is just the icing on the cake, when companies decide where to deploy their servers. Regardless, we are confident our actions are in the best financial and corporate interest of companies and they will continue to support our growth. Based on the success of this build, we anticipate an additional 12,000 sq feet of Green Data Center with a debut in the Fourth Quarter of 2011."
