NEW HAVEN, CT, September 02, 2010 (Press-News.org) New Haven, CT., September 1, 2010-- Last year, H1N1 became a pandemic. Schools scrambled to protect kids going back to school against what was feared to be an exceptionally deadly flu outbreak. While that scare has passed, health and school professionals don't want parents to lower their guard as another academic year begins. It can be very difficult to keep kids safe from illness in school, so how can parents protect their kids?
Lori Calabrese, award-winning children's author and mother of two, is responding with the release of her new picture book,The Bug That Plagued the Entire Third Grade.
Calabrese says, "Whether you're a parent, teacher or nurse, the cold and flu bug is out there all year long. I hope educators use this picture book to encourage discussion about preventing the spread of germs in a humorous way. Remember, since your children are not with you during the day, they'll need to know how to best protect themselves and others."
While there are many books that teach children proper handwashing and commonsense hygiene, Calabrese's gives new—and much broader—meaning to the term "catching the bug," demonstrating that when you ignore your runny nose and worsening cold, the release of "a bug" can wreak havoc on your school, your teacher and your classmates.
"We learned it's very important to be prepared to have an influenza plan in place," Calabrese says. "So let's educate our children in a humorous way and bring the fight to the bug this year."
