LANGKAWI, MALAYSIA, January 27, 2011 (Press-News.org) Travellers planning to head to the Malaysian resort of Langkawi towards the end of next month may find their visit coincides with the island's 2011 Squid Challenge.
According to the tourism division of the Langkawi Development Authority (LDA), the event will take place on February 25th and 26th, with the participants set to battle it out to catch the most squid in order to net one of the top prizes.
The rewards are greater than ever this year, the body claimed, which is sure to spur the entrants on to net even more of the marine creatures.
While the occasion is undoubtedly an exciting one for squid catchers - including those living locally and anyone who is visiting the island at the time - it also offers plenty for tourists to enjoy.
For instance, people staying in Langkawi hotels next month will be able to watch the traditional techniques of the Malaysian fisherman as they go about trying to outdo their counterparts.
The LDA said people who gather round to watch the action will get to "witness how the participants demonstrate their skills in order to be best squid catcher".
Langkawi Tourism Action Council's promotions and marketing manager Wan Suziana Wan Othman has told the New Straits Times some competitors have been known to scoop up 80kg of squids in a single night.
For more information on this event, visit the LDA website or contact the organisers on (+60) 4 966 7672.
