Michigan Drivers Facing Tough Winter Driving Conditions

Few drivers have to be as skilled in winter weather as those in Michigan. Here are some safe winter driving tips that will help you avoid car accidents in slushy, snowy and icy conditions.

2011-01-29
January 29, 2011 (Press-News.org) Winter driving presents challenges for everyone, even in places like Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor where most drivers have experience braving icy streets and highways. Indeed, no matter how experienced a driver may be, hazardous weather conditions can make even a short commute frustrating and dangerous.

However, it is best to proceed safely - even if it means driving slower than the posted speed limit. Winter car accidents often result when a driver travels too fast for the conditions or follows another too closely. The best practice is to expect lengthier travel times and avoid taking risks.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) offers several tips for drivers to keep their cars and themselves safe during the winter months:
- Winterize your car. Talk to your mechanic about which oil, antifreeze and windshield wiper fluid are right to run in your car during the winter. In addition, ask that he or she check your battery and fix any leaks, bad hoses or other similar problems.
- Check your tires. Make sure that your tires are in good condition and do not have any tread worn below 1/16 of an inch. The temperature can affect the pressure of your tires, so be sure to check it regularly.
- Know your car. Take the time to get to know how your car handles on snowy, icy pavement and alter the way you drive according to conditions.
- Know your route. Before you begin your journey, watch carefully for any news about weather and traffic conditions. Allow extra time to reach your destination and make sure that your gas tank is full.
- Be prepared. Stock your car with items that will help you if you get stuck. Keep a kit in your trunk with items like food, extra clothing, blankets, a shovel, and jumper cables. Be sure to have your cell phone with you.

Following these simple tips can go a long way in helping drivers avoid accidents in cold weather. Unfortunately, however, not all drivers are as careful as they should be in hazardous conditions and it is not uncommon for their lack of caution to lead to serious accidents.

Winter Road Danger in the Wolverine State

If you are planning a road trip or any extended motor vehicle travel, it is a good idea to check the weather. If possible, adjust your travel times to avoid winter storms. The Michigan State Police has a Winter Travel Advisory Service that describes the current road conditions for any chosen county. The department also issues winter travel advisories when poor road conditions are anticipated.
