Deborah Barnes, Author of The Chronicles of Zee & Zoey, Reveals Stunning Book Cover Design & Sample Chapter Excerpt
2011-02-02
CORAL SPRINGS, FL, February 02, 2011 (Press-News.org) Deborah Barnes, author of the upcoming book, The Chronicles of Zee & Zoey - A Journey of the Extraordinarily Ordinary, and the companion blog site, today revealed both the stunning cover design for her book and a sample chapter excerpt. The book relates the story of the journey of Zee, a lovable male Maine Coon cat, and Zoey, a high-spirited female Bengal cat and the amazing relationship and bond that formed between the two of them and the subsequent litter of kittens they had together.

"The cover is a delightful and brilliant work of art, enchantingly filled with all sorts of magical and mystical images that invites the reader into a world of fun and intrigue," said author Deborah Barnes. "We really wanted the cover design to portray the essence of the love Zee and Zoey have for one another as well as how they perceive life - to them each day is filled with the possibility of so many ordinary moments becoming extraordinary and we believe this cover translates that concept by evoking images of an enchanted garden filled with intrigue, magic and wonderment. The gate seems to exquisitely beckon the reader to open the book, not quite sure what wonderful adventure is in store for them, but being delightfully curious at the possibilities."

Deborah also revealed a finished sample chapter to provide a glimpse into the story, writing style and design of the book. In this sample chapter, Zee, the book's hero, met Zoey for the very first time and became completely smitten with her unique and strong personality and fell madly in love with her. The chapter, aptly titled, "The Wildly Inspired Zoey - Welcome to the Jungle," will provide a taste of how Zoey taught the author to live by the phrase, "to embrace the ordinary in our lives and dare to make it extraordinary."

ABOUT THE CHRONICLES OF ZEE & ZOEY
The Chronicles of Zee & Zoey - A Journey of the Extraordinarily Ordinary, is a story of the journey of Zee, a male Maine Coon cat, and Zoey, a female Bengal cat and the amazing relationship and bond that formed between the two of them and the subsequent litter of kittens they had together. The narrative is a warm, heartfelt, honest, humorous, sometimes sad, but very compelling look into the simple, but yet complex relationship that is shared not only between cats and people, but cats and cats. This interconnected relationship between cats and humans is the background story as the author shares her life - the heart bearing highs and lows - and how it has become affected by these extraordinary creatures. The text is enriched with a magnificent gallery of photos making the story even more enticing from the initial point of when Zee met Zoey for the first time, the whirlwind courtship to follow, and the subsequent pregnancy and then birth of four amazing kittens. A week by week update of the growth and progress of the kittens is then detailed with absolutely charming photographs, completely immersing the reader into the world of being a cat, and/or kitten, and how each day, even the most ordinary of events or situations become extraordinary through the eyes and mind of a feline. The book is peppered with humorous antidotes that will inspire conversations of any type of pet lovers and is spot on accurate in understanding the many nuances of a cat. The Chronicles allow the reader to participate and connect with it on a unique and personal level. Each reader will discover and take their own personal message and meaning from the story through their own relationships with pets, children, friends, family, co-workers - each imprint is exclusive to their own individual perception.

Island-scale study reveals climate-change effects

2011-02-01
A large-scale UC Davis experiment with ants, lizards and seaweed on a dozen Caribbean islands shows that predicting the effects of environmental change on complex natural ecosystems requires a large laboratory. The study, which was led by UC Davis ecologist Jonah Piovia-Scott, is described in today's issue of the journal Science. Piovia-Scott said previous studies have found that environmental changes (such as shifts in temperature, precipitation or storm severity) can affect ecosystems by adding or taking away plant and animal species, as well as by shifting the seasonal ...

Scripps Research scientists convert skin cells to beating heart cells

2011-02-01
LA JOLLA, CA – Scripps Research Institute scientists have converted adult skin cells directly into beating heart cells efficiently without having to first go through the laborious process of generating embryonic-like stem cells. The powerful general technology platform could lead to new treatments for a range of diseases and injuries involving cell loss or damage, such as heart disease, Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's disease. The work was published January 30, 2011, in an advance, online issue of Nature Cell Biology. "This work represents a new paradigm in stem cell reprogramming," ...

Metamaterials approach makes better satellite antennas

Metamaterials approach makes better satellite antennas
2011-02-01
Cheaper, lighter and more energy-efficient broadband devices on communications satellites may be possible using metamaterials to modify horn antennas, according to engineers from Penn State and Lockheed Martin Corp. "Existing horn antennas have adequate performance, but have undergone little change over several decades except for advances in more accurate modeling techniques," said Erik Lier, technical Fellow, Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co. "Modifications enabled by metamaterials can either enhance performance, or they can lower the mass and thus lower the cost of ...
