Southwest Solutions Group Supports New "Don't Text and Drive" Initiative Through ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

Southwest Solutions Group isn't known for installing their high-density storage and materials handling products in residential settings, but they were eager to help a family in need when ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition came calling.

2011-02-09
ADDISON, TX, February 09, 2011 (Press-News.org) Southwest Solutions Group isn't known for installing their high-density storage and materials handling products in residential settings, but they were eager to help a family in need when ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition came calling.

The company donated and installed a sophisticated carousel storage system typically used in hospital and manufacturing environments as part of a home makeover for a family in Wellman, Texas, whose 17-year-old daughter was killed in an automobile accident while texting and driving. The episode aired January 30.

"While our commercial grade automated storage systems don't traditionally find their way into homes, this was too important a cause to pass up," said Rich Riemer, Vice President and principal of Southwest Solutions. "The donation enabled us to make a positive impact on the life of a young girl and her family.

"Texting while driving is incredibly dangerous. Many at our company have teenage children. We wanted to be involved because we can identify with this important issue."

The carousel system was for the family's 11-year-old daughter, an avid craftsperson traumatized by the death of her older sister, and provides compact storage for all of her craft items in a special "craft suite" adjacent to her bedroom that was created during the home makeover.

For every vertical carousel it sells during 2011, Southwest Solutions will be making a monetary donation to a new national "don't text and drive" organization founded by the Texas family in honor of their daughter.

The company was initially contacted by Nate Galui, a design producer for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, who had seen the carousel system on the company's website. While touring the company's showroom in Dallas, Galui also saw a unique automated product that the company donated for use in a future episode.

The Emmy award winning reality program Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, now in its 8th season, is produced by Endemol USA, a division of Endemol Holding. It's executive-produced Brady Connell and George Verschoor. David Goldberg is Chairman, Endemol North America. The show airs Sundays from 8:00-9:00 p.m., ET on ABC.
