CFO Jon Kvalo of Solvtrans Takes Pride in His Company's Customer Relationships and Environmental Initiatives
2011-03-02
CARLSBAD, CA, March 02, 2011 (Press-News.org) Covering Scotland, Norway and Canada, Solvtrans' mission is to provide its customers with quality products while remaining eco-friendly.

Established in 1986, Solvtrans is a shipping and logistics company that specialises in transporting live fish. It employs 160 people with 13 located at its head office in Alesund, Norway and the rest on its range of vessels. What sets Solvtrans apart in its business is the way it handles and transports live fish. A disease outbreak in Scotland led to the authorities demanding an industry overhaul of live salmon transportation standards.

"The Scottish authorities decided to ban this way of transporting fish (open-valve) so we took on the challenge and started to move to closed-valve vessels," CFO Jon Kvalo states.

Closed-valve technology is the process of transporting fish onto the boat and containing them in a closed environment with no pollution or contamination entering or leaving the vessel during transportation. It allows crew to monitor and control the tank environment.

Kvalo believes that continuously evaluating and investing in technology is crucially important if Solvtrans wants to continue its success, especially when it comes to their shipping fleet.

"Our strategy is to have the most modern vessels and the newest technology," says Kvalo. "We have been involved in the design and construction of the vessels; we choose the on-board equipment based on its functionality because it is a specialised operation."
