GenTran Installs Solar Array to Test Products for Photovoltaic Market

Company Will Avoid 159 Tons of Carbon Emissions Over 25 Years

2011-03-04
CUMMING, GA, March 04, 2011 (Press-News.org) GenTran Corporation (www.gen-tran.com), the leading designer and manufacturer of transfer switches for residential and light commercial backup power applications, today announced the installation of a 24-panel photovoltaic (PV) system at its headquarters in Alpharetta. The PV system will enable the company to test products for the renewable energy market.

The funding for this renewable energy project was made possible through the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA) and its Clean Energy Property Rebate Program. Established in 2009 as a result of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), the Clean Energy Property Rebate Program offsets up to 35 percent of the cost of installing renewable energy property, implementing lighting retrofits or building efficiency upgrades, subject to a maximum cap that varies depending on the technology installed.

Installed by United Renewable Energy, LLC, the 5.7kW PV system represents a $35,000 investment that will generate approximately nine megawatt hours of power/year at a value of $1200 and will avoid 159 tons of carbon emissions over 25 years. After all federal and state incentives are applied, the project will have a two-year payback and will provide a real-world test bed for GenTran's engineering group to develop, test and verify new products under development for the renewable power industry.

"We're excited to enter the solar market with this project," said Jack Mandula, GenTran president. "While our focus for the past 29 years has been on backup power, we're excited about the added focus on alternate energy solutions. Whether consumers are using a portable generator, a wind turbine or a solar array, they still need a way to safely connect these devices to the electrical infrastructure of their home or business. And that's what we bring to the table," he added.

The three main components of a PV system include its centerpiece, the solar panels, which produce DC power, the mounting system, either ballasted or affixed to a roof, or mounted on the ground, and a solar inverter that inverts the DC into AC. GenTran's solar array incorporates 24 Suniva ART245-60-3 Monocrystalline Solar Modules manufactured in Norcross, Georgia, with at least 85 percent U.S.-based content. The Sunny Boy solar inverter and WebBox monitoring system are both by SMA America LLC. GenTran's solar array interconnects to the grid via net-metering through Sawnee Electric Membership Corporation.

This installation represents the first commercial solar array installation in Duke Realty's portfolio. GenTran moved its headquarters into the Ridgeland Corporate Center managed by Duke Realty in 2007 to allow the company to expand its sales, production, warehouse and office space.
