LAKE DISTRICT, ENGLAND, March 09, 2011 (Press-News.org) LateRooms.com highlights athletes from around the country will head to the Lake District for the Coniston 14 on Saturday April 9th.
The event is arguably one of the most beautiful road races in the country, as it traces a 13.8-mile route around Coniston Water and offers stunning views of the surrounding fells.
Having taken place every year since 1982, the race is a popular fixture on the local calendar and an important fundraising opportunity for community groups in the region.
Each year, the Coniston 14 committee generates about GBP5,000 for local charities and clubs through the event.
Registration for next month's race costs GBP19 for unattached runners, GBP17 for attached participants and GBP16 for people from Coniston and nearby Torver.
Peterborough athlete John Herbert set the fastest time in 2010 by completing the course in one hour 33 minutes, while Eleanor Greenfield led the women home in one hour 53 minutes.
The Coniston 14 traditionally attracts some 1,600 runners and the organisers are expecting a similar level of interest once more this year.
Coniston Water, the third largest lake in the region, provided the inspiration for the Swallows and Amazons books by Arthur Ransome.
Athletes can browse a selection of Lake District accommodation (http://www.laterooms.com/en/k16843804_lake-district-hotels.aspx) at LateRooms.com, which recommends a stay in the Sharrow Bay Hotel Lake District (http://www.laterooms.com/en/hotel-reservations/88045_sharrow-bay-penrith.aspx).
