HAZYVIEW, SOUTH AFRICA, March 10, 2011 (Press-News.org) The 2011 edition of the challenging Big Induna Mountain Bike Race has been confirmed for Saturday 11 June. As a CSA selection race, the big guns of the South African mountain bike community will be gathering in earnest in Hazyview, so go online and register today!
As one of the more appealing and challenging mountain bike races scheduled in South Africa each year, the Big Induna meanders through the spectacular scenery of the Mpumalanga Province, an area renowned for its countless canyons, cascades and proximity to the premier big game safari destinations of South Africa.
The Route
The tracks and trails - many of them hand cut especially for the annual event or flattened by the resident hippos which browse the river banks - traverse cultivated farm lands, thick indigenous sub tropical vegetation, towering scented plantations and fast flowing rivers.
Sweet single tracks incorporate sharp inclines designed to set the legs and lungs afire but, be warned, the real 'killer' climbing is in the back third of the race, so retain a bit of fight for the last legs of the longer marathon and ultra marathon routes!
Challenging technical bits on the pleasant downhill sections include rock shelves, rooty drops, bermed switchbacks and shallow water crossings, demanding experience and finesse over and above simply peak fitness!
Hazyview attractions
The charming subtropical lowveld town of Hazyview is situated in the midst of some of the most strikingly beautiful countryside in the blushing Rainbow Nation.
The majestic Panorama Scenic Route incorporates countless natural attractions - the Mac Mac, Lisbon and Berlin Falls, God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes, the Blyde River Canyon and the Long Tom Pass - and can be accessed directly from Hazyview.
South Africa's best loved Big Five safari destination, the Kruger National Park is literally minutes away from the little agricultural and forestry town, while a collection of fashionable, upmarket privately owned game reserves and bush lodges are located to the east of Hazyview.
Explore the riches of Mpumalanga
With a wealth of natural and cultural attractions within striking distance of the venue of the 2011 Big Induna Mountain Bike Race, why not extend your stay in the dazzling Lowveld and explore the incredible beauty of the area.
