Brides On A Budget May Spend More On Tailoring Than On The Dress

While brides may be spending less on wedding dresses through consignment and used dress avenues, the cost to have those dresses tailored or altered can sometimes be more than the bride bargained for.

2011-03-10
ARVADA, CO, March 10, 2011 (Press-News.org) Within today's price sensitive environment it is becoming increasingly more common for a bride-to-be to spend more on the tailoring of her wedding gown than for the purchase of the gown itself. While The Wedding Report, an online wedding information hub, states that the average cost of wedding gowns is around $1050, over 65% of women actually spend below this total. In many cases women are spending significantly below this level which explains the popularity boom of consignment and used wedding gown boutiques.

The metro Denver, CO area has seen a recent influx of successful consignment bridal boutiques which indicates that brides are more price sensitive to wedding gown purchases than ever before; and for good reason. While the economy has lingered in purgatory for some time now, brides are being offered more dresses at a lesser cost. At The Green Bride in Littleton, CO it is not uncommon for a bride to leave with a top name designer wedding gown for as much as 80% off the original retail price. Other consignment shops, such as Altar Bridal Consignment, have brides leaving with the feeling that they have received an amazing value for the money they have paid. Even the eco-conscious bride is able to feel at peace with what is usually a very eco-unfriendly textile purchase as they purchase from ECO-Bridal in the Highlands of Denver, CO.

However, the cost of tailoring and alterations is not dropping with the purchase of a used or sample wedding gown. In many cases, the tailoring cost is actually increasing as these dresses simply do not always fit as close in size as one that would normally have been ordered through a bridal store, thus pushing the cost of alterations even higher. While this is not uncommon, it can be a frustrating situation for brides to know that the labor to make their dream dress fit correctly may cost more than the dress itself.

Understanding this before visiting the local seamstress can go a long ways in feeling satisfied with the work being performed on your dress. Deedee Vicory, co-owner of The Wedding Seamstress, suggests that brides "always shop around for the best value", meaning that brides should not focus solely on the cost of alterations, but also the overall experience they expect to have and the quality of the work performed at the tailor studio. Additionally, brides always have the option of shopping around for a local seamstress and should never feel that the only choice is to use the seamstress that works for the bridal boutique. In many cases, using the bridal store seamstress can actually cost more since they split profits with the bridal store, thus increasing the cost to the bride.

After all is said and done brides should feel ecstatic to know that there are so many options for consignment, used, and sample gowns available for their wedding day. Brides should understand that just because the dress was sold for 80% less than the original retail value doesn't mean that the cost of labor to tailor the gown will go down accordingly. Even with the standard cost of alterations brides can still feel confident that they have numerous options available to them to help them find an affordable, yet absolutely stunning wedding dress.

The Wedding Seamstress is an award-winning regional tailor specializing in bridal alterations, dress redesign and custom dressmaking located in Historic Olde Town Arvada, CO.
