Penguin's Spinebreakers.co.uk Launches Play-Writing Competition In Association With The National Theatre

Penguin's online teen book community Spinebreakers has launched a play-writing competition with the National Theatre themed around chapter 5 of Mary Shelly's novel, Frankenstein.

2011-03-12
LONDON, ENGLAND, March 12, 2011 (Press-News.org) Penguin's online teen book community Spinebreakers has partnered with the National Theatre to launch a play-writing competition themed around Mary Shelley's novel "Frankenstein." The competition closes on 31st March and will be open for entries from UK residents aged 11-18. Entries will be judged in two age categories, 11-14 and 15-18.

Many GCSE students study "Frankenstein" as a curriculum text and the National Theatre have created resources on Discover online featuring playwright Nick Dear giving advice to young writers about how to approach adaptation, in particular chapter five of Frankenstein.

All entries will be read and judged by Associate Director (Literary) of the National Theatre Sebastian Born, Associate Director of the National Theatre Discover Programme Anthony Banks and Editor of spinebreakers.co.uk Danielle Innes. The entries will be judged on the basis of faithfulness to the narrative and atmosphere of the source text and imaginative flair in writing stage directions and dialogue.

One winner from each age category will win vouchers for up to four people to see a production at the National Theatre and go on a private backstage tour, National Theatre Frankenstein merchandise and a set of four Spinebreakers Iconic Classics

The competition can be entered on Penguin's teen website spinebreakers.co.uk and multi-media educational resources about playwriting, featuring Nick Dear, can be found on the National Theatre's Discover online

The Frankenstein Play-Writing Competition will run until 31st March 2011 and is open to UK residents aged 11-18. Entry is on Spinebreakers.co.uk.

Frankenstein is at the National Theatre until Monday 2nd May 2011 with tickets from GBP10. For further information visit http://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk or call 020 7452 3000
