DETROIT, MI, March 14, 2011 (Press-News.org) The Robert S. Shumake Foundation will present the 7th Annual Robert S. Shumake Scholarship Relays on Saturday April 30th in Detroit, MI. The largest private relay in the Midwest, the Shumake Relays will host over 2,000 participants, representing Track and Field teams from Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. The star athletes will converge upon the Motor City and go head to head in athletic competitions. No other relay in this region awards its participants for both athletic and academic accomplishments, additionally it is the only Thurgood Marshall Foundation-supported event of its kind. The players on each of the 80+ teams that have the highest grade point averages receive acknowledgment and honors. School teams participating in the Robert S. Shumake Scholarship Relays qualify all seniors in that school the opportunity to win a Shumake scholarship by writing a 250 word essay on the importance of education, home ownership and entrepreneurship.
The Robert S. Shumake Scholarship Relays is the vision of Detroit business man and author; Mr. Robert S. Shumake who has an undaunted passion to see young high school athletes exercise their talents and achieve their goals. Mr. Shumake was an All-City track star in his high school years at Detroit's Edwin Denby. Using the art of organized teamwork, Shumake established the relay competitions to highlight academic development and athletic ability.
