TORRANCE, CA, March 18, 2011 (Press-News.org) South Bay Ballet along with Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre will host Regional Dance America/Pacific 2011 Sunday, May 15 through Wednesday, May 18 at The Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. The annual festival is expected to draw more than 800 participants including dancers, instructors and observers from 21 member companies in Arizona, California, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Utah to study their craft, celebrate achievements and perform works selected by dance adjudication.
Regional Dance America/Pacific (RDA/P) provides advanced educational and performing opportunities for students with a serious commitment to their arts education. Students benefit from three days of classes taught by master teachers and three evenings of performances offering the opportunity to dance for peers and members of the dance community including professional companies, colleges and universities. Additionally, the festival extends exposure to opportunities at pre-professional summer programs and colleges; as well as scholarship opportunities such as RDA National Choreography Intensive, and professional company programs throughout the nation including American Ballet Theatre, San Francisco Ballet, Houston Ballet, and The Juilliard School, among others.
"The annual festival is not a competition, but rather a showcase for performers and an outstanding educational opportunity for young dancers," comments Diane Lauridsen, Artistic Director of South Bay Ballet, an RDA/P Honor Company and co-host of this year's event. "Some of the top dance educators in the country will instruct classes in ballet and modern dance providing the highest quality of training possible. Dancers gain a wider perspective about their current level of ability, and are given a step into the professional dance world through master classes, adjudication and auditions."
Lyn C. Wiltshire, Associate Professor, Associate Chair and Head of the Performance Unit and Dance Program at University of Texas at Austin Department of Theatre and Dance, is serving as the RDA/P 2011 adjudicator. Selected adjudicated works of member companies were announced by Wiltshire on March 10 and will be performed during the Las Vegas festival.
