Webhead Takes NIOSA & San Antonio Fiesta Goers Into the World of Mobile Technology
2011-04-07
SAN ANTONIO, TX, April 07, 2011 (Press-News.org) Revelers with smart phones will be able to get the information they need, as they need it

Fun-seekers carrying smartphones at this year's Night In Old San Antonio (NIOSA) Fiesta event will be able to get the information they need, in real time, to enjoy themselves safely thanks to a new mobile Web site produced by Webhead. "I am excited about this on many levels," said Nancy Avellar, 2011 NIOSA Chairperson and fourth Vice President of the San Antonio Conservation Society. "It is a great complement to NIOSA's and the society's ever-growing presence on Facebook; it is an easy, visual way for NIOSA visitors to find their old and soon-to-be favorite entertainment and foods; and--most importantly--it reminds the world that NIOSA is put on by the San Antonio Conservation Society, and all proceeds from NIOSA fund the education, grants, preservation and museum programs of the society."

Going live

The site went live on April 4, 2011. It includes descriptions of the food, beverages, and entertainment available at the event's 250 booths and users will be able to search by category. There will also be an event map on which the users can locate themselves, and then access information about nearby attractions. Additionally, the site will have information on safe rides, shuttle bus rides, rest room locations, first aid sites, and ATM locations, etc.

To facilitate access, NIOSA's organizers will post QR (also called mobile tagging) codes around the site. These are square bar codes that smartphones with widely available software can scan with their cameras. The smartphone will convert the code into the address of the NIOSA mobile website (www.niosa.org/mobile).

NIOSA and the digital future

"We owe our advancement into the 'mobile digital age' to Webhead," added Avellar. "We first approached them about developing a mobile website for the 2011 NIOSA event, but were concerned about price since we always strive to return as many of NIOSA's proceeds as possible to the society's programs for historic preservation. They came back with an overwhelmingly generous offer: they completely donated the design and development for a 'Mobile Optimized Website,' hosted as a sub-domain on the existing www.niosa.org website, and a QR code linking to that mobile site."

"We are very excited to be involved in this project, involving NIOSA's first mobile Web site," noted Janie Martinez Gonzalez, president of Webhead, San Antonio's premiere data security and Web site management firm. "The site will offer all the information that NIOSA attendees would need and expect, formatted for their mobile devices, including Androids, iPhones, and similar smartphones."

"We are thrilled to have worked with NIOSA to provide NIOSA-goers with important event information at their fingertips," added Melissa Adame, Senior Project Manager at Webhead. "Our goal was to bring NIOSA to the forefront of the digital frontier, and we believe that this mobile website is the first step in that direction. Webhead looks forward to continuing to be the technical bridge that brings our clients to the next generation of mobile technology."

NIOSA, of course, is one of the premiere events of San Antonio's 10-day Fiesta celebration. This year it will be held April 12-15 from 5:30 pm to 10:30 pm at its traditional location in the La Villita National Historic District in downtown San Antonio. The event, in its 64th year, is put on by 16,000 volunteers. Attendance is expected to be about 85,000.

Webhead, headquartered in San Antonio, handles mission-critical network operations for the military and intelligence communities, various branches of government, and civilian corporations, offering strategic and operational planning, digital security, site hosting and maintenance, and application development, among other services.
